A light source shines light through a specimen and sends an image to the objective lens which then translates into a viewable image through the ocular lens. The image can then be brought into focus in order to observe it more clearly.
The left eye is traditionally fogged with enough plus power to blur the vision by about three lines worse than the right eye. The examiner then defogs the left eye to its MPMVA. This process is repeated for the left eye with the right eye fogged.
